On behalf of myself, grnic and the KL team, I would like to give you some wonderful news about the ongoing development of the next generation product.
For over 2.5 years (starting March 2005), the beta testing section of the forum has been actively functioning. Many people took the journey with our development team onto the road of making a better product for everybody alike. Many great ideas had been discussed and some of them already implemented in the current and futurre KL products.
2 months had passed since we started actively discussing your feature requests and suggestions for new lineup of KL products. And now, considering the huge interest that version 8 had sparked among some of the active forum members, we will be publically making interesting information available. It will be published periodically once or twice a week, leading up to the first public beta. Not everything we can disclose for now, however non-technical details will be made publically available in this thread.
========= 08.09 ===========
1) One of the forum dedicated employees has already began monitoring and fullfilling his duties. I will be honest he did not just hear about the forum, but knew about it for quite a while.
2) In the product we are going to implement an "additional" technology for detecting malicious programs, which without a doubt spark a massive discussion here on the forums..
3) The plugins for email clients such as Eudora and Thunderbird are on the planned development list.
4) Product alerts will become more informative; Quite possible that for regular users "simpler" alerts will appear without overwhelming information.
5) Several key component settings can be configured right from the main window without switching to component subsections. More context menus are supported than in 6.0 and 7.0.
6) The product with express default settings will most likely to pass all of the leaktests. Moreover, in the october we are going to publish two articles, reflecting our position towards passing leaktests and information leakage when utilizing them on KIS 7.0.
7) Subsystems Anti-Spam, Anti-Banner and Parental control will be combined under a brand new component... Which one?! Anybody have any ideas?
8) Concept of reports will slightly change. For now we had completely rewritten a data storage layer, to support additional load which new report system inflicts on the product.
9) To expand the preview flexibility and controlling several listings in GUI of the product, we are developing our own method of the control element, which will replace all current standard listing controls. It will allow to perform sorting, grouping and data filtering.
10) Sorting by column, will most likely be done and automatic grouping of meanings. For the two time cloumns that grouping will be descending. (Today, Yesterday, Two days ago, A week ago, two weeks ago)
11) It will be possible to send details about detected objects onto KL centralized database automatically. This database will allow us to better protect users from really dangerous threats and even inform them about epedemics faster. The option will feature an OFF switch, although no confidential information is ever sent out.
12) In the "Update" section the user can see the number of signatures and also their breakdown by type and how they change over time.
13) Several key decisions are delayed specially for forum testing startup. We want to hear maximum information about any reasonable arguments in favor of one or the other way of implementing things in the upconing product.
========= 31.08 ===========
The following list will contain some additional information and answers to most of your questions for the passed week.
1) Version 8.0 will utilize a completely new AV Core engine, which contains several new advantages as compared to the current one
2) In light of the above, the antivirus bases format will completely change over.
3) The target for OS support is currently as follows: Windows 2k SP4+, Windows XP SP2+ 32 bit / 64 bit, Windows Vista SP0+ 32 bit / 64 bit.
4) The idea about "mini-interface" is currently under review, in addition to the big main window. Also support for Vista Widgets. The development will happen if time and advices are positive from the community at large.
5) The product will contain 2 new protection drivers.
6) Key Firewall and Proactive Defense subsystems will become new protection component,
7) The category of "Protection Scope" will be completely changed to allow granular tweaking for the object detection.
8) One of the new product Scan Tasks, will be a system wide vulnerability scan.
9) Possible in the beta builds we are going to test a new packet sniffer. The release of that component in the final build will depend on how the community responds.
10) Anti-Spam subsystem will learn to detect new kinds of spam with technologies that are already in use in our server products. It is quite possible they will appear even faster in 7.0 MP1
11) Forum testing for v8.0 will most likely begin in October.
========= 24.08 ===========
1) Personal line up of version 8 products will be released in 2008. Beta testing will start in Winter. Forum testing in Fall.
2) Version 8 is based on in-house new protection concepts and technologies, which have no current analogies on the market as we know it.
3) For now requirements and standards for the first version are completed. The product is in active development stage.
4) The core team contains the same people who brought you version 6.0. However some additional members from 7.0 joined development forces with us.
5) Some improvements planned for v8 will be included in v7 MP1, which will be released by the end of this year.
6) During v8 testing the particular attention will be paid to the forum threads. A separate KL team member will be allocated just for reading your suggestions and bug reports (in addition to all other KL members, which are already present on the forum)
7) In v8 we are planning to use several new technologies, which are developed cooperatively together with KL and other companies
8) The new GUI is again rewritten from scratch. Only small components of v6/7 are utlized
9) The main window is completely brand new and changed as compared to version 7.
10) The number components in the main navigator window is currently counted as six.
11) In the product interface it is planned to use graphical objects for dynamic and additional statistical information display
12) The product plans to utilize several online-services
13) Wi-Fi networks and protection routines will be expanded as compared to previous versions.
14) One of the product option, will perform a through inspection for maximum details through certain defined inspection points.
