McAfee Pleads with Dr Solomon's to Reduce Dr Solomon's Virus Detection Rate
Dr Solomon's Advanced Heuristic Analysis Provides Superior Level of Defense which McAfee Cannot Offer
BURLINGTON, Massachusetts -April 7, 1997 - In a surprise development, McAfee asked Dr Solomon's Software to reduce the virus detection rate of Dr Solomon's product because McAfee is unable to keep up with the volume of viruses, and can't achieve the same level of virus detection.
McAfee claimed that Dr Solomon's Advanced Heuristic Analysis engine is "cheating" because it will find more viruses in reviews than McAfee's products. Dr Solomon's is happy to confirm that the product given to reviewers is exactly the same product delivered to customers who have exactly the same capabilities at their disposal.
Advanced Heuristic Analysis is automatically enabled when Dr Solomon's detects that it is running on a highly infested computer -- which means Dr Solomon's provides a higher level of detection than competitors. The technology is available to every user and can be manually enabled at any time.
"This clearly demonstrates that McAfee is rattled by the success of Dr Solomon's products worldwide. We are now acknowledged by everyone, including McAfee, as having the best virus detection rate in the business. In particular, our successful introduction of Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus in the U.S. retail market has caused consternation at McAfee's headquarters," said Stephen Orenberg, senior vice president and general manager of Dr Solomon's North American Operations. "Competent reviewers already know how to test anti-virus products and don't need McAfee's help."
"If McAfee wants to compete in head-to-head reviews we suggest they increase their own virus detection rate," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Dr Solomon's. "McAfee's recent acquisition of 'Hunter' technology from a small Czech anti-virus company in order to improve its detection rate has obviously failed in its objective."
Advanced Heuristic Analysis was developed in 1995 to enable Dr Solomon's scanners to examine files for virus-like actions and identify more than 80% of unknown viruses, without causing false alarms. Dr Solomon's anti-virus scanner is consistently rated the best overall product by independent, third-party virus testing centers, including Virus Bulletin, the University of Hamburg, the University of Tampere and Secure Computing. In addition, Dr Solomon's product line has been certified by the National Computer Security Association (NCSA) for all platforms tested.
To further strengthen Dr Solomon's technological lead over McAfee, Dr Solomon's will shortly introduce new heuristics for macro viruses. Macro viruses are now the most problematic type of virus for both individual users and corporate customers. This new technology will continue to build on Dr Solomon's superior virus detection rates by detecting over 80% of new and unknown macro viruses without a false alarm problem.
McAfee users now concerned about the virus detection rate of the product they've purchased should contact Dr Solomon's Software at 1-888-DRSOLOMON (888-377-6566) to find out about Dr Solomon's competitive upgrade pricing. |
