Probably all of you have seen in the press that the Avira products are not working
properly on Windows 8. We are very aware of the fact that this is an extremely
critical situation for all of us. We are working hard to get our products Windows 8
compatible as soon as possible.
We expect to deliver the first update in the week from November 12-16, 2012.
With this document we’d like to give you a more transparent overview about the
current situation as well as an outlook how Avira plans to go ahead.

5. What about Version 2012?
Introduction:
Historically, Microsoft has always had a certification process with different levels for
the software running on its operating system. These levels are “Compatible with …”
and “Designed for …”.
In order to achieve these compatibility levels, there are many changes which need to
be implemented by the software. After these changes have been implemented, the
software has to be checked by Microsoft in order to confirm the results obtained by
the ISV (Independent Software Vendor). All these steps require significant amount of
time and effort.
The Windows 8 operating system, and its equivalent in the server area called Windows
Server 2012, have a completely new architecture. Their architecture forces the
software which runs on them to make significant changes in the frameworks and the
APIs (Application Programming Interface) used to write the software. Old frameworks
(e.g.: Layered Service Providers, Transport Driver Interface, etc.) will no longer be
supported on the long term.
However, Microsoft is not going to enforce from the very beginning (year 2012) these
new fundamental changes in the frameworks used. But, in order to achieve the compatibility
required for the certification it is required to fulfill these requirements.
2. Why is Avira not compatible with Windows 8?
Our goal is to offer our users the same excellent experience on Windows 8 as on
Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Our software works on Windows 8, but because
of the issues mentioned below, we are not able to offer the same experience as before.
This is why we decided to publicly display that our software doesn’t support yet
the Windows 8 operating system.
Avira is aiming to achieve the “Compatible with...” certification level, the same as
was done in the past with all other versions of Windows. At the moment of writing
this article (beginning of November 2012) we are not there yet, but we are working to
achieve this.
However, this is not the main problem we are facing. The most important issues we
are facing are related to the stability of the software and its integration in the Windows
8 operating system. Microsoft forces the software to implement several integration
mechanisms with the operating system.
For more information about what exactly is happening, please check the next topics.
Avira is currently planning incremental releases which allow customers to migrate
their operating system to Windows 8 while having the Avira security software in version
2013 installed and fully functional. The first release is planned for CW 46 (12-
16.11.2012) and the product version is 13.0.0.2761 from 13.11.2012.
3. Am I now protected on Windows 8?
As far as we could test, our software provides the protection it was designed for, it
can update properly so that the latest virus signatures and engine are reliably delivered
and inform the user about the issues encountered. However, users face different
problems regarding integration into the Win 8 Application Center or stability.
More details below…
1. What is Avira doing to provide a solution and when?
Avira is working hard to solve the problems and receive the certification for Windows 8.
We plan to deliver the fixes in three stages, each containing several smaller releases.
Stage 1:
We fix the crashes and compatibility problems.
When?
We expect to deliver the first update in the week from November 12-16, 2012. With this
update almost all crashes will disappear and the software can be used normally, with an
experience close to the one in Windows 7.
After this, we will deliver updates regularly until we receive enough feedback from our
users that all these problems are gone.
Stage 2:
We integrate better with the Application Center and we allow the user to use Windows UI
to:
activate/deactivate the product
perform an update
prolong the license
When?
This is an ongoing process which will start after the week from November 12-16, 2012 and
is expected to be finished before the end of the year 2012.
Stage 3:
Achieve the certification level “compatible with Windows 8”.
When?
After the first two stages are implemented and rolled out, we will concentrate on achieving
the certification.
NOTE:
We will roll out first the English and German versions of our products.
2. What about the localized versions of Free, Premium and Internet Security?
On November 19, 2012 we will release the kits of the localized versions. Afterwards we
will send out the notifications about the migration to Version 2013 to the according users
wihtin the next few days.
These products will have all fixes integrated, which we pushed for the English and German
versions. So, they will be as compatible with Windows 8 as the English and German
versions at this moment.
3. What about the business products Version 2013?
3.1. Avira Professional Security 2013
We didn’t release the Professional Security Version 2013 yet, but upon release it will be as
compatible with Windows 8 as the consumer products. The same applies to the localized
versions of the Professional Security 2013. The release of Version 2013 is planned for
December 2012. The first BETA has already been released to all our BETA testers.
3.2. Avira Server Security 2013
We plan to add support for Windows Server 2012 in the same stages as we do for our
consumer products. This product will be released together with the Avira Professional
Security 2013.
3.3. Avira Endpoint Security
This is a bundle including Avira Professional Security, Avira Server Security and Avira
Management Console.
It will be compatible with Windows 8/Windows Server 2012 as soon as the products
included will be released.
3.4 Small Business Security Suite
This is a bundle between Endpoint Security and Avira Exchange Security - Small
Business Edition.
We cannot predict in this moment when the Avira Exchange Security - Small Business
Edition will be compatible with Windows Server 2012.
The local protection part will be compatible with Windows 8/Windows Server 2012
when the client and server products it includes will be made compatible.
Avira & Windows 8/Windows Server 2012 (Status 2012-11-13) 12
3.5 Business Security Suite
This is a bundle between Endpoint Security and Avira Exchange.
We cannot predict at this moment when the Avira Exchange Security will be compatible
with Windows Server 2012.
The local protection part will be compatible with Windows 8/Windows Server 2012
when the client and server products it includes will be made compatible.
4. When are customers affected?
Customers are affected if they either install the Version 2013 or upgrade to Windows 8 and
keep their applications (default option of the upgrade assistant).
Due to the fact that the Avira products are not mentioned at all during the analysis of the
compatible applications, the customer does not get the chance to see the warning that his
Avira product is not officially supporting Windows 8.
5. What about Version 2012?
Currently we do not plan to provide Windows 8 compatibility to this version of our
products.
