Welcome to the avast! WHS Edition beta program!
This beta program is open, meaning that it doesn't require any registration, and that it is available for the general public.
avast! WHS Edition is a product designed specifically for antivirusprotection of the upcoming Microsoft Windows Home Server platform.Besides providing the protection of the WHS machine, it also supportssimple management of other avast! products on the home network. This isperformed directly through the WHS console, by means of a newconfiguration page.
Note: This is a very short beta; the product is scheduled tobe released in the first half of November 2007, i.e. by the time thefirst WHS-based systems ship.
Installation of the betaInstallation of the product is done in two steps:
- In the first step, "avast! WHS Edition" (a whole new product) beta is installed on the WHS machine.
- In the second step (which is optional), the avast! Home/Pro Editioninstallations on the network are updated to the latest beta version;this is necessary to ensure that the WHS version is able tocommunicate, and manage the other avast! installations on the network.
Installation in detail- Installation on the WHS machine
- Download the avast! WHS Edition beta package from here (current version: 4.7.14, 10/10/2007).
- Run the downloaded setup program on the WHS machine (either locallyor using a remote desktop connection) - follow the on-screeninstructions. Note that even though the setup offers many languageversions of the product, the WHS features are currently available inthe English language only.
- When the setup completes, let it reboot the server.
- Installation on the client machine - in the case where avast is already installed
- Download the avast! Beta installer from here (current Home/Pro Edition version: 4.7.1063, 10/10/2007).
- Run the beta installer on the machine in question (follow the on-screen instructions).
- Installation on the client machine - in the case where avast is not yet installed
- Download the latest avast! client installation package (current beta version: 4.7.1063, 10/10/2007):
- Run the beta installer on the machine in question (follow the on-screen instructions).
Getting started with the programOnce you have all the components installed, you can start playingwith the software. To access the management features, open the WHSconsole, and navigate to the "avast! antivirus" page. The page listsall computers with the WHS connector (plus the WHS itself), theircurrent protection status, their avast! version etc. Each of themachines can be right-clicked and features like scheduled scans beconfigured. You can even update the machines' subscription details.
