New Avira Rescue System – join beta test now

We are currently developing the new Avira Rescue System and would like to invite you to join the beta test which is about to start now. You are welcome to give feedback, report bugs, suggest enhancements and thus be actively involved in the development of this exciting new product.

Overall characteristic and feature description

Warning: The features in the list are in development, some of them are not yet integrated and some already integrated might change in the near future.
•
    Scan and repair a Windows System


Unlike the Avira AntiVir Rescue System that is still available on the Avira website the new Avira Rescue System is not only be able to scan a Windows system (XP, Vista, Windows 7) but it can also repair such a system, i.e. undo the changes that malware might have done to the registry in particular. Thus the Rescue System is the right answer to the growing number of malware, which cannot be removed as long as a system is still running.
•    Integration of Social Network Security

New functionality has been integrated into the product named Social Network Security. The product offers a link to the SocialShield website which will open in the default browser. Functionality can be accessed there.
•    Based on Ubuntu

The new Rescue System is based on an adapted Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop system and runs on that platform as an independent application.  Thus it provides support for a broad range of hardware and drivers and should run on a large number of systems available on in the market or used by customers.
•    Bootable image and Start up

It is available as an .iso file which as to be burnt to a CD or copied to a bootable USB stick prior to using it. After inserting the CD or USB stick it boots into an adapted and Avira designed desktop and automatically opens the Avira license dialogue (end user license agreement). The user has to agree to the license agreement to use the application. If he does not accept the EULA he is nevertheless free to use the other functionality available on the desktop.
•    Completely new GUI

The product comes with a completely new GUI that is directed at the inexperienced, layman user. Thus it centers on a scan and repair wizard which splits the scan and repair into a few easy steps.
•    Scan and Repair Wizard and Updating


The Scan and Repair Wizard is started via the Welcome page. The wizard offers:
•A partition selection page that shows all mounted partitions using their Windows names
•A scan progress page that shows the progress of the scan. Each scan is started by an update of the detection so that always the latest update is available. If no update is possible the product automatically uses the existing detection that comes with the .iso file.
•Suspicious files that are detected during the scan are automatically renamed so as to render them harmless. There is a command line tool available to undo the renaming for all files or specific files should there be a false positive among them.
•The repair is done as an integral part of the scanning and must not be started separately by the user.
•A results page finishes the scan and repair run. Scan and repair details are displayed in a scan and repair report.
•The scan and repair wizard uses an inbuilt configuration that is not available to the user to make sure that the scan and repair always delivers the best possible results.


•    Registry editor

The product is able to access the registry of a local Windows system. This is needed for the inbuilt repair functionality. But the registry access is also available via the GUI to allow manual edition of the registry.  This registry editor is developed by Avira and covers the main features as provided by the Windows Registry Editor.
•    Remote Connection


Sometimes a user might need help when trying to scan and repair his system, rescuing data or doing other things. For this the product offers to open up a remote connection via a teamviewer client.
•    What you should know about the beta


We started the beta with just the scan wizard and we will add additional features in the course of the beta.

So expect things like updating the detection, repairing the system, editing the registry or GUI enhancements to be added to the beta version in regular intervals.
