Anti-Malware.ru,an independent analytical organization that focuses on informationsecurity software, announces the publication of its latest annualreport “Analysis of the Russian antivirus protection market 2007-2008”.
The final figures for the Russian antivirus software market in 2007amounted to $131 million, which represents an increase of 94% on 2006.The key factors behind this market growth are the continued developmentof the corporate sector and retail sales, an increase in the amount ofstate orders and a reduction in pirated software.




Kaspersky Lab continues to lead the Russian market, with sales of$60.2 million and a market share of 45%. It has consolidated itsposition significantly, taking almost another 9% share of the marketfrom its rivals in the space of a year.

Symantec is in second place with sales of $24.5 million. Its shareof the Russian market fell by 9.3% and now stands at 18.4%. Symantec’smarket share is now 2.5 times less than the leader Kaspersky Lab.
Trend Mircro and Dr.Web also lost ground in the Russian market andtheir growth rates are now significantly below the market average.Their market share fell by 4% and 2.9%, with sales of $8.6 million and$8.4 million respectively. That allowed ESET to overtake them and claimthird place with a market share of 13.7% and sales of $18.3 million.
Overall, the top five companies earned $120 million in 2007,accounting for 90% of total antivirus software sales in Russia, whichpoints to a virtual monopoly of the market by those vendors.

In 2007, as in the previous year, two vendors – Kaspersky Lab andESET – strengthened their positions. For the rest of the companies onthe market 2007 was a less successful year. Symantec (9.3%) sufferedthe largest loss of market share, followed by Trend Micro (4%) andDr.Web (2.9%). F-Secure, a market newcomer, managed to winapproximately 1% of the market in 2007.
The experts at Anti-Malware Test Lab forecast growth of 60% for theRussian antivirus software market in 2008, which means sales volumeswill reach at least $210 million. Changes are also expected in the topfive ranking of vendors. Given the right market conditions, ESET shouldcontinue to demonstrate a high growth rate that will take it ahead ofSymantec. The success of Dr.Web’s AV-Desk service should also see itoutstrip Trend Micro in the race for fourth place.
Other players on the market shouldn’t be forgotten. McAfee hasopened an official representative office in Russia and has announcedits intention of investing substantial sums in the Russian market.McAfee is working actively with its partners, though when compared tothe current activity of its competitors no significant breakthrough canbe expected for 2008.
Another relatively new arrival, BitDefender, has a lot of potential,but it is unlikely to demonstrate any significant growth in 2008. InRussia BitDefender and ESET have the same owner, which means the formerwill not threaten its more successful “sibling”.

Totalmarket antivirus software in 2007 in Russia amounted to 133.1 millionUSD, which is 94% more than 68.6 million USD in 2006.

Such rapid growth in the market was a surprise to most experts and greatly surpassed our own expectations.

Great contribution to the growth of anti-virusmarket is also making "obelenie" software installed in organizationsand home users on computers.
In addition, significantly influenced the dynamics of the market heldby large public tenders for the supply of anti-virus software (forexample, in the Federal Tax Service and the Federal Customs Service ofRussia).

Against the backdrop ofworld average (about 14%, according to the IDC Worldwide Secure Contentand Threat Management 2007-2011 Forecast and 2006 Vendor Shares) somuch talk about the growth rate is very high degree of attractivenessof the domestic market.



As seen from Table 1, the position players on the market virtually unchanged.
The exception was Eset,which with a record growth of 289% on the outcome in 2007 managed toenter the leading three and change the composition of market leaders.
It is noteworthy that demonstrates Eset for competitors such staggering growth rate for the second consecutive year.



Sales by market leader - the company "Kaspersky Laboratory" - in 2007 grew by 141% - a record figure for the company in recent years - and amounted to more than 60 million USD. For purposes of comparison a year ago, the company's growth rate did not exceed 45%.


The steady but modest growth showed the company Symantec (28,9%), Trend Micro (19,4%) and "Doctor Web," (33,3%).
Their sales volume amounted to 24.5, 8.6 and 8.4 million USD respectively.
And "Doctor Web," virtually razed by sales from Trend Micro.


In the column "Other producers" includes such vendors as Microsoft,Aladdin, BitDefender, Avira, Safe'n'Soft Software, Agnitum, etc.
Total sales of these producers, in our assessment, increased by about 2 times and reached 5 million USD.


Inthe five leaders of the amount earned in 2007, 120 million USD,representing 90% of all sales of antivirus software in Russia. This fact allows to speak on the actual market-sharing between these five vendors.
