Avira’s security experts warn against harmful websites that abuse avulnerability in Internet Explorer 7 which foists harmful programs oninnocent victims

Tettnang, 11 December 2008 – The German IT security providerAvira has discovered several malicious websites that deliver harmfulcode, which use a vulnerability in Internet Explorer to infect thecomputer by stealth.

So far these exploits are mainly appearing on Chinese web servers.However, according to our experience the cyber criminals will breakinto many websites from all countries and make links to these harmfulservers.

Microsoft has already confirmed the vulnerability, but can’t provide anupdate yet. Activating Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) forInternet Explorer and deactivating Active Scripting in the browserconfiguration will help remedy the threat.

Avira users don’t need to worry about these known threats: The GermanIT security solution already recognizes and blocks them. The threatsand their variants are called EXP/XMLSPAN.A, Avira recognizes with theVDF file 7.01.00.223.
