Avira will change the update system to a new multiple VDF procedure shortly called nVDF in the second week of November. 
The “n” in nVDF shows that we will use 32 VDF files instead of the previous 4 files.
The new virus definition files get new file names: instead of antivir0.vdf to antivir3.vdf the new names are vbase000.vdf to vbase031.vdf.

Our products support the new nVDF procedure in the following versions:
Windows desktop products and Windows Server from Version 8 on; Unix products from Version 3 on, Avira AntiVir SharePoint and ISA-Server from Version 3 on.

In order to guarantee a compatibility with older products we offer additionally so-called incremental VDFs (iVDF) which consist of the previous four VDF files.
So also Avira products can be used which can’t already handle the nVDF files.
From engine version 7.9.0.172 on the Avira products can work with iVDF files.


What does this concretely mean?

All users which have current Avira products don’t have to change anything. They will get their updates as usual. But if you are using the manual update procedure by means of a fuse bundle, changes of the system are necessary. We will provide you with the previous iVDF fuse bundle but only until March the 30th of 2010. If you want to use the manual update procedure afterwards you have to upgrade to current product versions.

We will provide you with nVDF fuse bundle after the restructuring. There will be a link to our homepage so that you only have to adjust the file name and the download link.


Why do we release this change?

In the last years we observed an explosive growth of malware in the wild. Therefore the VDF0 file which is the basic file of the incremental procedure increased to a size of about 16 MByte.
We have to update this file once a year. This update causes inconveniences for a lot of our customers and produces a heavy load for our update infrastructure. This also concerns to a certain extent the update of the VDF1 and VDF2 files.

Due to the change to the nVDF procedure these update intervals are prolonged. We assume that e.g. an update of the VDF0 updates will be necessary every third year.

In conclusion you can say that the nVDF procedure will improve the update situation for all Avira Users.
