LiveUpdate permits a Symantec product to automatically connect to a Symantec server and download program and virus definition updates.
Updates that use the LiveUpdate Administration Utility 1.x (LUAU 1.x) are made though a network connection. Updates that use LiveUpdate directly (without using the LUAU 1.x) connect through the Internet.
For corporate sites, there are three factors that may cause you to consider using a different method: - Network traffic: Administrators may want to reduce external traffic by having users download from an internal site.
- Firewalls: LiveUpdate establishes a TCP/IP connection to a Symantec server. This implementation, in some cases, requires modification to firewall software.
- Security: For security purposes, your Symantec product may run on a computer or appliance that does not have Internet access. In this situation, you can configure it to obtain updates through the network from an internal LiveUpdate server, which does have Internet access.
Symantec developed the LiveUpdate Administration Utility 1.x, Luadmin.exe, to address this. You can set up either an intranet FTP or HTTP server. You can also set up a directory on a standard file server to handle all LiveUpdate packages for your network. Users connect to an internal server to retrieve updates instead of connecting to external Symantec servers.
The LUAU 1.5 is a central management tool for LiveUpdate. The product was developed before the release of Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (CE) and is included with CE to provide additional control and functionality.

- Macintosh Updates

- Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions
- PC Anywhere
- Spam definitions (note: not for Brightmail products)
- Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (including 64-bit clients and Linux clients)
- Symantec Antivirus for Handhelds
- Symantec Antivirus for MS Sharepoint Portal Server
- Symantec Antivirus for Palm OS
- Symantec Antivirus Scan Engine 4.x
- Symantec Antivirus Virus Definitions
- Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers
- Symantec Client Firewall (SCF)
- Symantec Client Firewall Administrator (SCFA)
- Symantec Client VPN

We suggest that you take an inventory on how many copies of these programs that you have installed, excluding those programs that you no longer use. Next, determine the following: - How your Symantec programs are currently being updated.
- How much time is currently spent doing this.
Once you have this information, you can determine whether you should use the LUAU 1.5.
