Billions of Spam emails are sent every month, but not all advertising email is the same. However they do all have one thing in common: they're attempting to persuade the recipients to part with their money. In many cases, this is a lot of money. That's why we're focusing in this newsletter about two of the most common types of Spam-based fraud.The first is known as phishing. You might receive an email that appears to have come from your bank, from eBay, Amazon or some another popular ecommerce site. The mail might ask you to create a new password or validate your account by providing new personal access data. A link takes you to the apparently "official" website where data should be entered. And that's precisely when cybercriminals get hold of your password and other personal details. Stay safe and remember that genuine businesses and websites will never send you a mail asking you to reveal your passwords.The second type of Spam-based fraud is the scam attempt. This is nothing other than a fraudulent mail that can have a kind of snowball effect, as was the case with chain letters. Such mails usually promise huge gains from spending only a small amount of money in a lottery or supporting a project in Nigeria. Tips & Tricks: Time to bring your Internet Explorer up to dateCybercriminals have exploited a security loophole in Microsoft Internet Explorer that allows them to smuggle viruses such as Trojans on to PCs. This is achieved by enticing unsuspecting Internet users to visit special websites where the malware can be slipped on to an unsuspecting user's PC. Last December even Google fell victim to such attacks, which originated from hackers in China. Microsoft confirmed the existence of this vulnerability and worked flat out to develop a remedy, which has now been issued as an extraordinary software update."This security deficiency in Internet Explorer represents a huge risk for millions of users," explains Travis Witteveen, Head of International Sales and Marketing at Avira. "The usual advice always to keep software on your PC up to date is not much good if there is no update yet available. That's why more security measures are required to prevent malware penetration - for example Avira's Premium Security Suite. This checks Internet traffic for harmful content and blocks this before it can reach Internet Explorer and do damage there."Avira's Security Solutions identified the malware before it was even included in the virus definition files. We recommend that users who have not yet downloaded the new Internet Explorer update should do so as quickly as possible via Windows Update.
