What’s New
FortiClient v4.0 MR2 includes the following new features:
‧   A new IKE daemon that supports “Mode Configuration” for dynamic IP assignment and
provides compatibility with Cisco VPN appliances.
‧   A new antivirus engine (v4.1).    The new AV engine includes many improvements to
provide better virus/malware detection and cleaning.
‧   Usability improvements such as reducing the number of firewall popups.
‧   Web filtering configuration and performance improvements (the web filtering UI has
been redesigned).
‧   A new “resume download” capability for FortiGuard updates – interrupted updates no
longer have to be completely restarted.
‧   License enforcement changes.    A valid FortiClient Premium Edition license is required
to connect to FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager appliances for centralized management
and reporting.
‧   NAC/Endpoint protocol changes to support new capabilities implemented in FortiOS 4.2.

FortiClient v4.0 MR1 Patch 2 added the FortiClient Premium Edition’s extended AV database to
the Standard (free) Edition client.    No configuration changes are required in the Standard client.   
For both versions, the extended AV database is automatically downloaded when the client first
connects to the FortiGuard servers.    In the Premium client, the option to enable/disable the
extended AV database has been removed.    Once the extended database has been downloaded,
future AV database updates are deltas only.
FortiClient V4.0 MR1 Patch 2 also added the FortiGuard antispam service to the Standard client.   
Installing the antispam component of the Standard client now provides free access to the
managed, FortiGuard antispam service.

*A note about FortiClient’s virus databases: FortiClient currently implements two separate virus
databases – the core database (containing active virus signatures) and the extended database
(containing older or “zoo” list viruses).    Both databases are now used by both the Standard and
Premium clients.    Previously, the extended database was only available in the Premium client.   
As of FortiClient MR1 Patch 2 (v4.1.2), the only difference between the AV functionality in
each version is the update frequency.    The Standard client updates both databases daily.    The
Premium version supports hourly updates (if configured) for the core database and daily for the
extended database.    Since the extended database contains legacy viruses, it is not necessary to
update it more frequently than once per day.
