Symantec Delivers Advanced Backup Reporting to Enable Service-level Management

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Jan. 30, 2007– Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today unveiled Veritas Backup Reporter6.0, an enterprise backup reporting tool that provides ITadministrators with comprehensive visibility into backup and recoveryoperations.
Backup Reporter enables IT administrators to enhance backup andrecovery operations, verify backup service level compliance, and runbackup as a shared IT service. These capabilities are a valuable assetfor managed service providers or organizations that need to analyze andjustify backup expenditures. Backup Reporter enables comprehensive datamanagement, backup consolidation, and reporting of heterogeneousenvironments which support Symantec’s Veritas NetBackup™ and BackupExec™ products, in addition to third-party backup solutions.
Enhancing Backup and Recovery Operations
Exploding data volumes and heterogeneous environments make it difficultfor IT administrators to gain essential visibility to accurately reporton backup and recovery. Backup Reporter’s centralized reporting view ofsingle or multiple backup applications help customers to optimize theirenvironment by aggregating historical data to better forecast trendsand help justify the need for critical capital expenditures such astape drives or additional backup servers and backup media.
Backup Reporter flexibly adapts backup and recovery operations to theneeds of the business. To address the variety of key stakeholderswithin an organization, from CIO to backup administrator, BackupReporter allows users to customize the definition of backup successbased on the audience need. Furthermore, IT administrators can beproactive in assessing backup operations as all views are hierarchicalwith drill-down capabilities. To jumpstart the reporting process, ITadministrators can select any of the hundreds of out-of-the-box reportsavailable, or can use the report wizard to create a customized report.
Empowering IT to Verify Backup Service Level Compliance
IT administrators are forced to comply with not only internal ServiceLevel Agreements (SLAs), but also, with external governmentregulations. Backup Reporter puts backup administrators in the driver’sseat and allows them to be proactive about managing compliance withgoverning policies. It provides them with the ability to “prove” thatcritical data is backed up and business-critical clients andapplications are recoverable within their established corporate orindustry backup and retention policies.
Backup Reporter also eliminates the time consuming manual process ofcreating ad-hoc reporting spreadsheets. Reports can be scheduled anddistributed via email, thereby automating a process that can otherwisebe prone to error.
“Today’s enterprises face a growing number of challenges in trying tocomply with regulatory requirements and management requests, particularly when it comes to trying to achieve a single, centralizedview of their backup and recovery operations across multiple, disparatebackup applications and ensuring that they have a standardized andrepeatable reporting process in place,” said Laura Dubois, researchdirector, IDC. “Backup Reporter is a timely solution to this growingneed that helps take the guess work out of trying to comply withregulatory and management requirements.”
Running Backup and Recovery Operations as a Shared IT Service
Backup operations typically operate as a cost center and are separatefrom the rest of the organization without means to relate the actualcosts of running backup and recovery operations to executivemanagement. Backup Reporter transforms this process by providing amechanism for IT administrators to achieve cost analysis, departmentalvisibility, and chargeback. Values for backup and recovery operationscan be formulated, assigned, and appropriated to specific businessunits or customers. This helps IT administrators to proactively showwhat backup resources are being consumed and assigns a value to backupoperations that is based on the requirements of the business. Reportscan be filtered by custom parameters that can be designated to meet thecompany’s needs. For example, backup utilization can be presented in avariety of parameters such as geography, application, business unit, platform, location, and service tier.
The ability of Backup Reporter to run backup and recovery operations asa business also make this product ideal for managed service providersas it easily identifies resource consumption across diverse customerenvironments and provides usage data which can be directly used forcustomer billing.
Symantec’s Unique Value Proposition
Together, Backup Reporter and NetBackup deliver a comprehensive datamanagement and reporting solution. This powerful combination providesreal-time operational management with core NetBackup (via NetBackupOperations Manager) for day-to-day IT tasks and advanced backupreporting with Backup Reporter for managing backup service levels andcompliance. For customers with multiple NetBackup environments, BackupReporter can aggregate reporting into one centralized view using commonNetBackup icons.
Unlike other reporting products, Backup Reporter is differentiated byits open schema giving IT administrators access to all the valuableinformation captured in the database. Backup Reporter enables data tobe seamlessly exported and tailored with custom applications such asfinancial business systems. Data is made consistent or “normalized”across different backup applications so trending and detailed analysisof heterogeneous environments is dramatically simplified.
“Backup Reporter provides enterprises with superior reporting thatdelivers premier service-level management that today’s enterpriseenvironments demand,” said Matt Kixmoeller, senior director, productmanagement, Symantec. “Backup Reporter empowers IT administrators to beproactive about understanding, measuring and proving backupservice-level compliance.”
Pricing and Availability
Backup Reporter is available now directly through Symantec or viaSymantec’s worldwide network of value-added resellers, distributors, and systems integrators. Pricing is based on the number of backupdevices (servers and clients) the customer needs to report on. Pricingranges between $135-$600 USD per backup device.
